OBB teachers set deadline, plan stir

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 28 The Operation Black Board (OBB) teachers of the State have given a deadline of January 10, 2011 to the State Government for taking positive steps to remove the anomalies in the regularization of teachers.

The All Assam OBB Teachers Association has announced that it would go for a stronger movement if their demands are not fulfilled within the stipulated time.

The teachers appointed in the year 2000-01 had to wait almost for ten years for regularization of their work in the year 2010, that also through a High Court order in 2008. Ironically, almost 1000 teachers have still not been able to join their respective schools, due to severe anomalies in appointment process, said Manoj Lahkar, joint secretary of the OBB Teachers Association.

According to him, the service of total 5677 teachers was regularized under the court order.

Responding to the call of the association, the OBB teachers staged sit-in demonstrations in 18 Pre Primary Training Centres, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Buniyadi Training Centres (BTC) and normal schools of different parts of the State. Memorandums were also submitted to the Commissioner of Elementary Education by the demonstrators.

Despite the regularization of posts, the OBB teachers are getting fixed salary of Rs. 2,000 for Middle English School and Rs 1,800 for the primary schools, which is a gross injustice to them. If steps are not taken to fulfill our demands within January 10, we would resort to more such dharna activities and demonstrations at the Directorate of Elementary Education, he added.

The association also alleged that the government is creating confusion among the other teachers and teaching aspirants claiming that the OBB teachers court case is the reason behind the delay in teachers appointment in State.

We want to convey it to the State government that if we get our legitimate dues in time, we would withdraw the court case, he said.

The association has also demanded to remove the anomalies in the regularization of OBB teachers, full pay package to the teachers, promotion, seniority and other benefits on the basis of 2001 appointment and provision of pension among others.
