Numerous organisations oppose Citizenship Bill

By Correspondent

TEZPUR, Feb 13 - The effort of the BJP Government to implement the Citizenship Bill 2016 for providing citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshis, thereby posing a serious threat to the existence of the indigenous people of the region is being opposed by the various organisations here.

At a district-level convention of various organisations here, the participants resolved to stand united for registering a strong Statewide protest against the Bill. The conclave was held under the initiative of frontline scribes body, i.e., All Assam Journalists Union at the Asam Sahitya Sabha Bhawan here on Sunday in the presence of a number of nationalist organisations, including Asam Sahitya Sabha, AAMSU, AJYCP, AAKRSU, AAGSU and Goria-Moria Deshio Jatio Parishad, among others.

The officer-bearers of the organisations opined that Assam cannot always bear the load of unwanted infiltrators coming from foreign lands. However, it is seen that the BJP Government instead of checking the infiltration problem, is on the contrary trying to welcome the Bangladeshis by implementing the Citizenship Bill, which can never be accepted, the office bearers of the nationalist organisations mentioned.

Later, the conclave also resolved to organise a State-level convention here on the issue by involving senior journalists and intellectuals of the State, including, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Utpal Baruah, Paragmoni Aditya, Nitumoni Saikia, Prasanta Rajguru and Pranjal Sen Deka.

Addressing the gathering, AAJU president Pankaj Kumar Nath said that the convention will be held very shortly with the involvement of various nationalist organisations of the region in order to chart out a proper road map for adequately confronting the Citizenship Bill-2016.

Besides other dignitaries, the special meeting held under the presidentship of senior journalist Anwar Ahmed was attended by former president of Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Puneswar Nath, president of NGO SAVE, Pulin Bhattacharya, secretary of Tezpur Sahitya Sabha, Pankaj Baruah and secretary of Sonitpur Sahitya Sabha respectively.
