Number of arrests goes up to 18 in Hailakandi violence case

HAILAKANDI, Oct 14 - With the arrest of two more persons today, the number of arrests in connection with the violence of Friday�s mob violence at Nitainagar village of Hailakandi district has gone up to 18. Hailakandi�s SP, Pabindra Kumar Nath said that the two persons arrested today were directly involved in the burning of the Ertiga vehicle, which was brought by the team of nine members.

Assistant sub inspector Subimal Nath is investigating the case.

The police are investigating the video footages and authentic sources to identify the persons involved in the violence. SP Nath said that all the persons connected with the violence and instigated will be arrested and assured that no innocent person will be arrested. He said that the villagers and businessmen who came for rescue will be rewarded. He said that violence was created by some people and for this the entire village should not be blamed. He said that the persons connected with the violence will not be spared under any circumstances.

A team of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) visited the village and appreciated the people who came forward for saving the policemen and also to control the violence. Some of the villagers alleged before the team that the police are raiding the area and some are fleeing the area fearing arrests. The district president of AGP, Aftab Uddin Laskar said that they have assured the villagers of Nitainagar Part II including women not to be panic.

The grade four employee of Hailakandi Zilla Parishad, Swaraj Uddin Laskar (47) is suspected to be the main instigator of the violence and police is interrogating him thoroughly. Laskar was arrested last night on the basis of enough proof. Sources said that most of the youth of the village fled the place after the incident.

It can be mentioned here that at least 12 policemen and some civilians were injured, some of them seriously in mob violence in Laskarbazar of Nitainagar village part II of Hailakandi district on Friday night. Nitainagar is around 13 km away from Hailakandi town. A team of nine members including a police constable of Sonai police station of Cachar district Jamil Hussain came to Laskarbazar, a weekly cattle market allegedly to trace a stolen cattle in a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga SUV.
