NRI filmmaker�s appeal to British PM

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 � Dr Ranen Sarma, producer of award winning Assamese film Ahir Bhairab have expressed concern over the lack of necessary infrastructure to deal with mental illness in India and particularly in Assam.

The London-based NRI recently urged the British Prime Minister David Cameron to extend support to mental health programmes in India, which was covered by many London-based newspapers.

The physician also appealed the Assam Government to help him in creating adequate infrastructure in Assam to deal with the mental health management problem. The theme of internationally acclaimed film Ahir Bhairab, which has been directed by Siba Prasad Thakur, is schizophrenia.

In a press statement, Dr Sarma said that the aim of this film was to create awareness among the people regarding mental health. With the same objective the film was screened in many villages of the State free of cost. �Through these awareness campaigns, I am trying to find a solution to the problem related to mental health management in an effective and affordable manner,� he said.
