NRC update: Bijoya for vigil on forged documents

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, July 28 - BJP MP Bijoya Chakravarty today urged the Centre and the State government to step up vigil to detect forged documents being submitted by suspected illegal migrants to get enrolled in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Moving a Zero Hour notice in the Lok Sabha here this afternoon, Chakravarty said that already 20,000 such forged documents have been detected and 28 persons arrested so far. Tight vigilance should be mounted to check such forged documents, she demanded.

The National Register of Citizens of India is a lifeline for the people of Assam and their identity. By the order of the Supreme Court, the NRC has been imposed in Assam. However, the previous government had tried to halt the work by stopping to finance it, as a result of which work on the NRC could not continue. But after the Narendra Modi-led government took charge in 2014, an amount of Rs 280 crore was sanctioned and work on the NRC updating process restarted.

The Assam-Bangladesh border is very porous and lakhs and lakhs of people have come in. In the course of time, it has been discovered that people want to push their names in the voters lists so that they can vote and create imbalance in the State.

I simply want to say that there are some quarters trying to spread canards that there are atrocities against some people and some minority communities. But that is not a fact. There are no atrocities anywhere in the State, neither on a community nor on people, Chakravarty said.
