NRC, CAB issues rock Assembly

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 28 - The winter session of the State Legislative Assembly commenced on a stormy note today over the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), leading to a walkout by the Opposition Congress and the AIUDF legislators.

The ruckus started at 9.40 am when Congress and AIUDF legislators sought a discussion over CAB and NRC issues, cancelling the question hour. Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami asked both the parties to raise the issues after the question hour, as according to the existing rules of the House, the question hour cannot be cancelled.

Adamant on raising the contentious issues cancelling the question hour, the Opposition MLAs moved in to the well of the House with placards, shouting slogans against the CAB and the Governments move to demean the NRC.

Approximately 15 minutes of the proceedings of the House were disturbed as the legislators of both the Opposition and the ruling parties resorted to sloganeering, even as questions were raised and answers placed in the floor of the House amid the din.

Things took a dramatic turn when, in response to the Oppositions Jai Aai Asom, the BJP legislators shouted Bharat Mata ki Jai which continued for some time.

The issues raised by the Opposition were important in nature, and as per rule it should have been brought after the question hour. It is unfortunate that no discussion was held on such important issues, the Speaker said, adding that he unilaterally cannot change the rules unless members of all parties sit together and decide so.
