SHILLONG, March 15 - The National Peoples Party (NPP) on Friday declared Agatha Sangma as its candidate from the Tura seat for the Lok Sabha polls.
The party also announced the name of four-time MLA Thangminlien Kipgen from the Outer Manipur Parliamentary seat as part of its first list of candidates.
Elections are slated to be held in Meghalaya on April 11 under Phase 1 of Lok Sabha elections 2019.
Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K Sangma made the announcement after the partys central election committee meeting.
It has also decided to field a former bureaucrat Ferlin CA Sangma as the candidate of the party for the bye-elections to the Selsella Assembly seat, which will be held on the same date.
Agatha was the former Tura MP and also a former MLA of South Tura. She had last year resigned as South Tura MLA to pave way for her brother to continue as Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the NPP leader informed that the party is expecting more applications to come in and in a day or two it will also be announcing the second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
It may be mentioned here that the NPP had recently adopted a resolution to contest from all 25 seats in the North East.
