Nowgong College pond turns into haven for avian guests

NAGAON, Nov 19 - A pond measuring one hectare inside the historic Nowgong College campus has presently turned into a centre of attraction, even for foreign tourists. Especially during the winter season, various migratory birds have been regularly visiting the pond, thereby attracting both domestic and foreign tourists.

As per information available, the pond has been promoted with special care and initiative by the Nagaon Forest Division and Biology Department of the college. Further, the pond has been stocked with aquatic plants preferred by migratory birds, as also the fishes.

Besides, the college authority has constituted a special care unit called People�s Committee for Conservation of Migratory Birds in Nowgong College campus and engaged locals nearby to create public awareness for conservation of these birds.

Like previous years, the college authority in association with the Biology Department and the People�s Committee on Monday organised a sensitisation programme at the college campus in which known bird conservator and Principal of Digboi College, Dr Deep Saikia; DFO, Nagaon Division, Rajen Chaudhury graced the occasion and spoke for protection as well as conservation of these beautiful birds.

In the programme, Dr Sarat Borkatoki, Principal of Nowgong College, Lalit Gogoi, Head of the Department of Biology, Dr Bhuban Chandra Chutia, general secretary of Assam Science Society�s Kolongpar unit, among others, were also present.
