By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, April 4 - Widely known as a notorious criminal, kin pin of a honey trapping racket Rafikul Hazarika alias Babujan was finally traced in Dergaon and arrested by the Sivasagar police yesterday after a weeks manhunt following a womans FIR against him on sexual harassment and attempt to murder her in Sivasagar on March 29.

He was produced before the Magistrate today and was given two days police remand. Rafikul reportedly tried to flee to Guwahati defying the nationwide lockdown to seek interim bail from Gauhati High Court to avoid arrest. The woman filed the case in Sivasagar police station ( case no. 390/2020 u/s 448/294(B)/506/323/376 and 384 IPC) on March 29 night.

Two days later the woman told the media that Sivasagar police could have arrested him had they been a little more alert the very day. Rafikul, she alleged, had been carrying out sexual harassment on her for the last two years taking advantage of her poverty and helplessness after her husbands death. Rafikul offered her a job in his firm and conspiratorially took her to different places and often sexually exploited her and recorded his debauchery in hotel rooms on his mobile and started blackmailing her. He, she said, threatened her of dire consequences with his revolver if she divulges the truth. Rafikul allegedly used the woman for gaining access to the higher officers of the ONGC for his personal gains.

Rafikul was arrested by Sivasagar police after the death of his young and highly educated wife Sabih Sahin (Jufu) in suspicious circumstance in case no. 723/14 in 2014. Women organizations in Sivasagar took out massive protest demonstrations against releasing him on bail. The women organisations said Rafikul had been running a honey trapping racket in Sivasagar ONGC and earning crores of rupees and heavy contracts illegally in the PSU since many years back. Sivasagar citizens have demanded immediate arrest of the notorious criminal.

Meanwhile, BJP Sivasagar district committee has expelled Rafikul from the primary membership with immediate effect from April 1, informed BJPs district president Surovi Rajkumari.
