NILAMBAZAR, June 3 - Panchayat representatives of south Karimganj area have demanded the cancellation of the notification regarding shifting the headquarter of South Karimganj development block from Kaliganj to Nilambazar. In a memorandum, the GP president and anchalik panchayat members as well as different social organisations of south karimganj area, have mentioned that the Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of Panchayat and Rural Development has issued a notification regarding shifting the headquarter of south Karimganj development block under Karimganj district from Kaliganj to Nilambazar on recently. The South Karimganj development block is the second largest block in Assam. It comprises 21 Gaon Panchayats ( 5 GPs from Badarpur constituency, 5 GPs from North Karimganj constituency and 11 GPs from South Karimganj constituency.)
In the memorandum, they have mentioned that Kaliganj is the heart and middle point of south Karimganj Block area. This block was established at Kaliganj since the year 1964 on a donated land covering area about 33 bighas. People's of several GPs of south Karimganj development block areas alleged that the P&RD Department has issued the said arbitrary notification without any reasonable excuse. They have also submitted the separate memorandums urging the same to the minister, P&RD Assam, Principal Secretary, Commissioner, Department of P&RD and Deputy Commissioner, Karimganj.
They mentioned that the government of Assam has created four development blocks in South Karimganj constituency namely Kayasthgram, Binodini, Bazarghat and Medol with the re-organisation of existing Kaliganj block vide Gazette Notification Published on February 28, 2016. Without taking any positive steps to implement the notification for the proposed new blocks, the present order of shifting of the headquarter of South Karimganj development block was issued without any justification. It is only for political interest, not for public benefit, they alleged.
