Noted seismologist SK Sarma no more

GUWAHATI, June 17 - Prof Surya Kanta Sarma, pioneer seismologist and environmental scientist of the NE region breathed his last at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) here around 5.30 am today due to chest infection. He was 83.

Prof Sarma, founder professor and head of the Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University, obtained his PhD from the Oregon State University, USA on seismology in the early 1960s. He also studied meteorology while in the USA. He joined Gauhati University in the later part of the 1960s. He then joined the GU Department of Environmental Science as its founder professor and head in 1980.

Prof Sarma guided several researchers in carrying out their research on topics related to seismology and environmental science. He led the Assam Science Society as its president between 2003 and 2005. He was also a founder of the Society for Environmental Protection, Education and Research (SEPER).

He authored several books on physics, seismology and environmental science and many of his research papers were published in several international science journals of repute.

Prof Sarma practically played the role of a pioneer in introducing the study of seismology and environmental science in the north-eastern region. He played a major role in the introduction of environmental science in the State�s colleges.

He leaves behind his wife, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives. His last rites were performed at the Navagraha cremation ground here this afternoon in presence of a large number of friends, students, fans and relatives.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Prof Sarma�s demise is an irreparable loss for the State�s educational and social spheres. He has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family.
