DIBRUGARH, Nov 24 � Dr Abdur Rashid Choudhury, internationally known medical practitioner who obtained his MBBS from Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) here, passed away recently in Derby, UK.
Born to Irman Ali Choudhury and Sumsun Nesa Choudhury, in village Bhatirkupa I, Kalibari Bazar, in the district of Hailakandi, Dr Abdur, who leaves behind his wife and two sons, was liked and respected by his friends and colleagues.
Dr Abdur came from a humble background, grew up in an interior village and had to work very hard to achieve his goal of becoming a doctor to help mainly the people of Assam. With the encouragement of his hard-working parents and family, he successfully achieved all the qualifications and experience he needed to become a highly skilled doctor.
Dr Choudhury passed the matriculation exam in 1952, ISc in 1955 and took the MBBS degree from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, in 1960. He did MS in General Surgery in 1965 and continued to work in general surgery in Assam Medical College until 1968. When he was an Assistant Professor in General Surgery dept he received a scholarship from the Government of Assam to get the training in Neurosurgery in the United Kingdom.
Dr Choudhury took the degree from Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) London in 1970, FRCS Glasgow and FRCS Edinburgh in 1971 and MS in Neurosurgery from the University of Aberdeen in 1973. In UK, Dr Choudhury worked as a neurosurgeon in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Aberdeen and Derby.
He returned to Assam in 1973 and then again in 1978 to try to set up a neurosurgical centre. Unfortunately, due to lack of proper facilities during that time, he could not make this possible. From 1982 to 1995 he worked as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in the Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital, Saudi Arabia. More recently he worked as a medical assessor of retired miners for receiving disability living allowance.
