GUWAHATI, June 23 � Noted theatre personality Robin Neog passed away in the wee hours today under mysterious circumstances. The body of Neog was found in Lalonggaon area at Lokhra under Garchuk Police Station around 2 am today where he had reportedly gone to meet a financer.
The police said, �Prima facie it appears that Neog was hit by a vehicle on National Highway 37, where his body was found. He was in touch with his wife till late in the night over cell phone.�
However, it was still not clear as to whom Neog had gone to meet at Lalonggaon last evening.
Born on February 21, 1953 in Biswanath Chariali, Neog was instrumental in adding the glamour quotient to the theatre industry of the State. It was he who first introduced popular silver screen faces like Jatin Bora to the theatre world.
It was under Neog�s initiative that national award winning actress Seema Biswas acted in an Assamese play under Hengul Theatre for the first time.
As an actor too, Neog�s work was widely appreciated. He made his acting debut in the silver screen with Pulok Gogoi�s Srimati Mohimamoyee in 1979.
His role in Abdul Mazid�s Punakon, in which too he played the protagonist, was much appreciated. In his early days of acting career, he was associated with Aradhana Theatre.
Later, Neog got associated with Hengul Theatre from 1999 to 2004, after which he floated his own theatre group, naming it Ashirwad Theatre.
Some of his popular plays under Ashirwad Theatre included Ejon Abhimonyur Sondhanot, Mama Bhagin, Ejoni Morom Loga Suwali and Maa Dewta aru Maina.
Although Neog acted in and produced a number of plays and VCDs thereafter, he was having problems in managing his finances in the last few years.
Neog leaves behind his mother, wife and two sons. His last rites were performed in the Navagraha cremation ground, which was attended by members from his fraternity, besides his well-wishers.
His death has been widely condoled. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Anjan Dutta too have expressed grief at Neog�s untimely demise.
