NOTA outscored votes polled by several candidates in 2014

GUWAHATI, April 8 - �NOTA� outscored the votes polled by a number of candidates in the constituencies of Assam during the last Lok Sabha polls held in 2014.

Among the 14 parliamentary constituencies of Assam, the highest number of votes for NOTA percentage wise � at 2.16 per cent of the total votes polled � were cast in the Autonomous District (Diphu) constituency, while the lowest of 0.40 per cent was in the Barpeta seat during the 2014 elections.

There were 4,266 votes for NOTA in Karimganj, comprising 0.48 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency in the 2014 parliamentary elections. In a field of 15 candidates, NOTA votes outperformed 11 of the contestants.

In the Silchar constituency, 4,310 votes, or 0.54 per cent of the total votes cast, were for NOTA. Of the 17 contestants in Silchar, eight received less number of votes than NOTA.

Out of the total votes cast by the electorate of Diphu in the last Lok Sabha polls, 11,747 votes or 2.16 per cent were for NOTA. Of the five candidates in the constituency, one received fewer votes than NOTA.

In the Dhubri seat, NOTA got 5,811 votes or 0.42 per cent of the total ballots cast. Of the 15 contestants, seven got less number of votes than NOTA.

In Kokrajhar, 18,183 of the votes, or 1.49 per cent of the total, were polled as NOTA. There were six candidates in the fray and NOTA outscored two of them.

NOTA polled 4,785 or 0.40 per cent of the total votes in Barpeta. Of the 15 candidates who contested from the seat in 2014, six received fewer votes than NOTA. The Guwahati parliamentary constituency saw 6,720 votes being cast for NOTA, comprising 0.44 per cent of the total votes polled. NOTA outscored 11 out of the 18 candidates in the fray from the seat.

Of the total ballots polled by the electorate in Mangaldoi constituency in the last general elections, 10,722 or 0.87 per cent went to NOTA. Out of the 12 candidates in the fray from the seat, the score of six was below the figure received by NOTA.

In Tezpur, NOTA accounted for 1.70 per cent or 16,667 votes out of the total polled. More people opted for NOTA than for four of the nine candidates in the fray from the constituency.

There were 8,782 NOTA ballots, comprising 0.71 per cent of the total votes polled, in the Nagaon constituency, with NOTA managing to outperform three of the eight contestants.

More votes went for NOTA than for nine out of the 13 candidates in the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 elections. Of the total votes polled in the constituency, 12,403 or 1.06 per cent were cast for NOTA.

In Jorhat constituency, 14,648 votes, comprising 1.57 per cent of the total ballots polled, were for NOTA. Of the 10 candidates who contested from Jorhat, six received fewer votes than NOTA.

A total of 16,809 NOTA votes were cast in the Dibrugarh constituency, which was 1.89 per cent of the total votes polled. NOTA managed to outscore three out of the six candidates in the seat.

NOTA received 11,204 votes or 1.01 per cent of the total votes polled in the Lakhimpur constituency. More votes were polled as NOTA than for as many as nine out of the 13 candidates who contested from the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
