Nostalgic moments at Cotton Collegiate alumni meet

GUWAHATI, Feb 12 � Nostalgia ran high on the second day of the valedictory function of Cotton Collegiate Government HS School completing its 175 years of existence, with the alumni and teachers exchanging their experience with the present students.

The past and present students� get-together evoked strong memories among the past-students, who assembled longing for meeting the old classmates and teachers and share their experience with the present students.

�The school and its environment have a major contribution in the lives of all those who studied here. We are fortunate to be the inheritors of its glorious history,� said writer Bimal Hazarika. While some of the alumni recalled the impacts of the Assam Movement in the students� life and the school itself, some other recalled the teacher-student relationship in their days.

�The students were unruly no doubt, but their sincerity in studies always amazed me,� said a former teacher, Eliza Sarma, narrating one of the memorable instances of her life.

While film directors Bhupen Kaman and Ehsan Majid, journalists Sushanta Talukdar and Mrinal Hazarika and other students and teachers shared their experiences in the event.

Earlier, a discussion was held on the history and present status of Cotton Collegiate HS School and the education system.

The discussion was participated by noted writer Dr Hiren Gohain, retired teacher of Gauhati University Dr Indu Mohan Das, retired DPI Haren Das and principal of KC Das Commerce College, Hitesh Deka.

The seminar stressed on making the mother tongue compulsory in all the schools of the State and reintroducing some important subjects like history and geography in schools.

�To make a positive change in the education system, the political influence should be done away with in the school managing committees and the appointment of teachers should also be free from political influence,� said Manoj Saikia, general secretary of Cotton Collegiate HS School Alumni Association, the organisers of the event.
