Northeast cultural centre to be set up in Delhi

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, June 2 (IANS): The government will set up a North East Cultural Centre (NECC) here to promote the region's culture and facilitate more exchanges.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, Minister of Development of North East Region (DoNER) B.K. Handique said the NECC will be established within the complex of the existing Centre for Cultural Resources & Training (CCRT) at Dwarka in southwest Delhi.

He said the setting up of NECC is one of the outcomes of the discussions Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with a delegation of students from the region in December 2009.

The statement said the NECC will be a permanent platform in New Delhi for cultural

exchanges not only among the people of the northeast living in Delhi but also with those from other parts of the country.

Handique said his ministry had asked the union culture ministry to help establish the Centre.

The ministry of DoNER and the North Eastern Council will arrange funds to organise a series of events during fiscal 2011-12 through the active involvement of the people from the northeastern region residing in Delhi and in the National Capital Region.
