Meghalaya bags 2 gold, 7 bronze at Khelo India Tribal Games in Chhattisgarh

Shillong, Apr 12: Meghalaya athletes excelled at the First Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 held in Chhattisgarh from March 25 to April 3, securing two gold and seven bronze medals.
Donkupar L. Shadap from Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi and Kate Diamond Lyngdoh from Mawlai, Shillong clinched gold in the compound men’s and women’s archery events respectively, emerging as standout performers for the state.
Shadap said his journey in archery began at a young age after watching competitions in his village. He attributed his success to rigorous training, guidance from his coaches, and sustained support from the state government.
Lyngdoh, meanwhile, set her sights on a bigger stage, expressing her ambition to win a medal at the upcoming National Games in Meghalaya. She also acknowledged the government’s role in providing equipment and travel support, which she said has been crucial in her development.
In wrestling, Juh Pa U Juh Nongtdu from Nartiang in West Jaintia Hills secured a bronze medal in the 60 kg Greco-Roman category. He said he is training intensively for the 2027 National Games in Meghalaya and hopes to represent both the state and the country in the future.
President of the Wrestling Association of Meghalaya, Isaiah Kharmawphlang, noted a significant improvement in training facilities and support for athletes. He said that while athletes earlier had to bear their own expenses, they are now benefiting from structured assistance, including access to international-level coaching.
With Meghalaya set to host the National Games next year, the state has witnessed a boost in sports infrastructure, alongside growing participation. More than 35,000 athletes have taken part in various state-level tournaments, reflecting a rising sporting culture and preparedness for the upcoming event.
