Manipur COVID-19 cases reach 55,000 mark

Imphal, Jun 7: Manipur reached the grim milestone of 55,000-plus coronavirus cases on Sunday with the detection of 823 new infections in the past 24 hours. The state also recorded 9 more patients succumbing to COVID-19 related complications in the same period, pushing the fatality tally to 881, as per the state Health department.

With the addition of 823 new cases, the state's COVID-19 tally stood at 55,230, a grim milestone which the state achieved after being hit by the second wave in the last week of March this year.

As 646 patients were discharged upon recovery today, the recovery tally of the state also rose to 45,165, leaving 9,184 active cases. The recovery rate of the state was 81.77%.

The new cases were reported as test results of 8,773 samples were received in the last 24 hours. The positive rate was 9.38% against the previous day's 8.71%.

The worst-affected Imphal West district alone reported 245 fresh COVID-19 cases with three more deaths, taking the infection tally to 19,808 and death toll to 328.

The second worst affected Imphal East district registered 192 fresh cases and four deaths. The infection and death tally of the district were 12,818 and 239 respectively.

Thoubal district reported 86 new cases, 71 in Churachandpur, 69 in Kakching, 49 in Bishnupur and 56 in Jiribam districts while other districts reported below 10-mark except 14 in Tengnoupal district.

Death of one each was also reported in Kakching and Kangpokpi district.
