Manipur CM congratulates Mary Kom on winning her first Tokyo Olympics bout

Imphal,July 26: Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on Sunday congratulated six time world champion MC Mary Kom of the state on winning her first ever Tokyo Olympic boxing bout against Dominican Republic's Miguelina Hernandez Garcia on Sunday.

Sharing the information in a tweet soon after the end of the fight on Sunday, Biren Singh wrote, "Great start to the game @MangteC. We look forward to your great performances in the upcoming matches. The country is expecting another medal from you."

Earlier in another similar tweet, he wrote, "Great performance against Dominican Republic's Miguelina Hernandez today,@MangteC. Let's keep the spirit high." In the same spirit, Manipur's youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip also today congratulated Mary Kom for her success in the first round of the Tokyo Olympic.

In the day's bout which was telecast live on TV, the 38-year-old boxer Mary, who is a 2012 Olympic bronze-medallist, prevailed 4-1 against a rival who is 15 years her junior and a Pan American Games bronze-medallist. Mary Kom, a mother of four, will next be up against third-seeded Colombian medallist Ingrit Valencia, who was a bronze-medallist at the 2016 Rio Games on July 29 afternoon.
