Guwahati, April 27: In a bid to accurately predict forecasts of rainfall intensity, direction of storms and even hailstorms the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will be installing eight doppler radar systems in various parts of Northeast India.

As per reports, the eight radar systems will be installed at Jorhat, Guwahati, Dhubri and Tezpur in Assam, Lengpui in Mizoram and one each in three other state capitals — Imphal, Kohima and Itanagar in the current financial year.

The purpose of a doppler radar is to identify the presence, speed, distance or direction of objects. It sends out radio waves, which reflect off surfaces and return to be detected by the same device.

Northeast which is mainly covered by hills and forests poses a barrier in the weather forecast, however, the installation of the doppler radars will eliminate this impediment and the weather department will be able to accurately predict forecasts.
