Imphal, Feb 23: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting the poll bound Manipur today to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s election campaign for its 60 candidates, party sources in Imphal said.
The Union Home Minister is scheduled to attend a public meeting at a public ground at Churachandpur district,65 km south of Imphal during his first visit to the state after the dates of polls were announced last month.
This will be followed by another public meeting at Kangpokpi district headquarters,45 km north of Imphal. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also expected to accompany the Union home minister during the day's visit.
Later the visiting Union home minister will join a door-to-door campaign at Bamon Leikai under Yaiskul assembly constituency. The BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi will accompany the visiting Union minister.
"This would be the first visit of a Union Minister to a hill district headquarters like Kangpokpi in the ensuing elections," says BJP's state secretary Paokham Haokip who is the in charge for Sadar Hills said when contacted on phone. "So the visit will definitely boost the morale of the electorates in the district."
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state and addressed a public meeting at Luwangshangbam multi-discipline sports complex ground in Imphal East district amid tight total shutdown by the underground organisations. Meanwhile security had been beefed up in Imphal and areas where Union home is scheduled to visit today.
It may be mentioned that many star campaigners of the BJP including Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari,Union minister of shipping Sarbannada Sonowal, Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Pratima Bhaumik,Union minister of women and child development, have been taking part in Manipur's election campaign for its 60 candidates.Manipur will go to polls on February 28 and March 5.
