North East Super 6 soccer launched

GUWAHATI, Oct 24 - The maiden edition of the North East Super 6 football tournament will kick start at Gangtok tomorrow.

The 32-team six-a-side tournament for boys above 16 years has been initiated by Asian Paints with Ceat Tyres being the associate sponsor. The tournament will be organised in collaboration with North East United FC (NEUFC). The initial matches will be played in 10 cities of North East and the final is scheduled to be played here on November 23. Duration of the matches will be 20 minutes.

Attending the trophy and jersey unveiling ceremony here today, former international footballer Renedy Singh said such tournaments will definitely help in spotting skilful youngsters of this region. �I am grateful to the Asian Paints for organising this championship as it will give opportunity to the youngsters to showcase their talents.

�Northeast has produced numerous quality players who are not only leading clubs of the country but also the national team in international circuit. I hope this tournament will introduce more players and will create a pool of talents for the future,� Renedy said.

The preliminary rounds will be held at Gangtok (October 25, 26); Itanagar and Agartala (November 2, 3); Dimapur, Shillong, Aizawl (November 9); Imphal, Guwahati, Silchar (November 15, 16); Guwahati (final on November 23). The venue for the Guwahati chapter is Assam Engineering College ground. The champion team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

Asian Paints officials along with NEUFC general manager Ashley Pinto were also present on the occasion.
