North East power meet under way

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Aug 11 The 9th conference of North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) went underway here today, which is likely to focus on overcoming the power shortage.

Development of power sector in North East and various aspects of power generation and power distribution would be discussed, Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited spokesman ED Kharmujai said.

Agencies of the regions power utility sectors will be present at the conference along with experts.

Representatives from Central power authorities are also participating.

The conference will focus on the technical aspects, while tomorrow the Power Ministers of the region would share their views and come up with ideas to lift the power scenario in the region.

Meghalaya Power Minister AT Mondol said issues ranging from generation, transmission, inter-State power issues, power deficit and grievances with PowerGrid will be discussed.

It is a common platform to take up the issues. The problems are forwarded to NERPC which will later take up the issues with the Union Government, he said.

Municipal strike: Employees of Shillong Municipal Board today began a three-day ceasework protesting inadequate pay, thus affecting essential services in the capital city.

Angry over the delay in disbursement of 40 per cent arrears as per the revised pay, Shillong Municipal Employees Association embarked on the ceasework and threatened to continue it indefinitely if the government failed to fulfil their demands.

All the State Government employees have got their arrears. But we are yet to get it, Associations president Sylvanus Pyngrope said.

The Association demanded immediate release of the arrears and payment of salaries by 10th of every month.

Security personnel led by a magistrate dismantled a pandal erected by the Association at the premises of the Boards office to hold a demonstration.

The State Government had last year announced an overall pay hike of 32 per cent for all its employees, with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007.

In the wake of the strike, essential services mainly water supply and garbage disposal were severely hit in the city. Water supply in households of many localities in the city were disrupted since this morning. PTI
