North East India open tennis championship

GUWAHATI, March 11 - The Racquets and Balls Tennis Association (RBTA) in collaboration with Kreeda Bharati will organise the second edition of the North East India Open Tennis Championship in memory of Ranjit Dutta at the RG Baruah Sports Complex, Nehru Stadium here from March 17 to 20.

Around 300 players from Northeastern states like Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and host Assam will be participating in the championship.

Addressing the media, Alok Kumar Tripathy said, � Our idea is to promote tennis, at the same time imbibe the sportsmanship qualities in the individuals and also to develop a sports culture.�

�To promote a talented player, we will give cash award of Rs 20,000 to the most promising player of the tournament in the name of Ranjit Dutta scholarship award,� added Tripathy.

The events will be held in, under-10 years (combined boys and girls), under-12 years (boys singles), under-14 years (boys and girls singles), under-18 years (girls singles) and Open Men's doubles.

The budget of the championship will be around 4 lakhs while the total scholarship money of the championship is Rs 1 lakh. The scholarship money will be given from quarterfinal stage.

In the opening ceremony on March 17, the organiser will felicitate the parents of the players who are performing well at the state and national level with Jija Mata Puraskaar.

The association will also felicitate Anup Lahoty posthumously, Susan Das Choudhury and Runumi Das.

The other present on the occasion, Anshuman Raji Das, president, RBTA, Pritam Goswami, teasurer, RBTA and Amal Deka, president, Kreeda Bharati.
