North East Craft Carnival gets under way

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 - The North East Craft Carnival which is a unique initiative of NEDFi to promote quality products of various craft sectors of North-east got under way on August 9 at the NEDFi House here.

The five-day extravaganza held on the occasion of the 20th foundation day of NEDFi is an attempt to showcase and promote craft along with quality products of various vibrant sectors of the North-east through NEDFi-assisted small enterprises. This includes sectors like handloom, handicraft, tourism, food processing etc.

Altogether 40 entrepreneurs from the region are taking part in this programme with an array of contemporary products. The craft segment includes water hyacinth craft, black pottery from Manipur, handmade paper, sculpture from Tripura, bamboo cutlery, Assamese jewellery, scrap fabric etc.

The handloom segment is offering a glimpse into the traditional attires of different tribes and communities in the region. With eye catching motifs and every imaginable hues, the products of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipuri and other places on display are attracting a lot of visitors. The tourism sector includes homes stays and eco camps of Sikkim, Meghalaya and Assam with informative and interactive display counters to help in planning weekends or vacations. The event is also showcasing natural dye products ranging from various silk items, natural dyed handmade paper and even furniture.

According to the organizers, the event is a golden opportunity for all the visitors including buying houses, corporate buyers, e-marketers, craft boutiques to witness various vibrant sectors of NER, to interact with the producers directly. The exhibition is open from 10 am to 7 pm and entry is free.
