Non-functional streetlights pose problems to city residents

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Nov 29 - The residents of Adarshapur, Kahilipara said the non-functional streetlights in their locality are yet to be repaired by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) despite their complaints.

Adarshapur Bylane-4 Unnayan Samiti general secretary Dhrubajyoti Sarma said, I lodged a complaint in the toll-free number of GMC about the defunct LED streetlights on November 4. Contrary to the promise of ensuring repairs within a couple of days, nothing has been done till today.

A team of officials from GMC visited our locality on November 17. After checking the streetlights, they informed us that these are needed to be replaced and for this, they had to inform the office. But no action has been initiated yet. Earlier this year, we changed the bulbs of several streetlights in our area with the contribution from the residents, he added.

Meanwhile, non-functional streetlights are seen in many areas of the city.

The GMC recently, in a statement, said sometimes many streetlights become non-functional mainly due to the damage done to the power cables during road construction work by the PWD, water pipelines laying work by the Jal Board and also due to road accidents that cause damage to electrical poles.
