GUWAHATI, May 17 The Sanmilita Janagosthiya Aikya Mancha (SJAM) will engage itself to ensure development of all sections of the people living in the Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD) areas and also restore mutual belief among them, said Aikya Mancha chief convener Hiteswar Barman today.

The Aikya Mancha got its candidate Naba (Hira) Kumar Sarania elected from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat in the latest general elections, results of which were declared yesterday.

Barman, also president of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (Hiteswar faction), told this newspaper that the victory of the Aikya Mancha candidate Naba Sarania has been able to instill a sense of security among the non-Bodos living in the BTAD areas.

But this victory was possible only because of the en masse participation of the people of the BTAD areas in the entire election process. This has increased the Aikya Manchas responsibility and now it should engage itself for the welfare of the entire BTAD population. The Aikya Mancha would not discriminate against any section of the BTAD people, he said.

On the issue of restoration of peace in the BTAD areas, Barman said that it has become mandatory for those working in these areas to restore mutual belief among all sections of the people. Restoration of mutual belief among the people is a must for restoration of peace to these areas, Barman asserted.

On the issue of determining the Aikya Manchas attitude towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance, he said the Mancha would hold its office-bearers meeting on the issue shortly.

It needs mention here that Sarania, a surrendered member of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), won from the Kokrajhar Constituency by defeating his nearest rival Urkhao Gwra Brahma of the Bodoland Peoples Progressive Front (BPPF) by a margin of 3,55,779 votes. Sarania secured 6,34,428 votes against Brahmas 2,78,649 votes.

The victory of Sarnia assumes significance in view of the fact that for the past 16 years the constituency was returning the candidate of the pro-Bodoland or pro-Bodoland Territorial Council organisations.
