North Lakhimpur, March 9: The filing of nominations by various candidates contesting the Assembly polls from four LACs in Lakhimpur district was complete today—the last date of filing. Congress veteran Bharat Narah, who is contesting for the first time since 1985 for 109 Nowboicha LAC, filed his nomination before the District Returning Officer in North Lakhimpur today.

Since 1985, Narah, who served as a Cabinet Minister in four previous governments, represented 112 Dhakuwakhona (ST) LAC consecutively for five terms. Today he filed his nominations along with his wife and ex-MP, Lakhimpur Ranee Narah. His was followed by Dr. Joy Prakash Das of the Congress for 111 Lakhimpur LAC.

The Congress candidate for 112 Dhakuwakhona (ST) LAC, Padma Lochan Doley also filed his nomination today before the Sub-Divisional Returning Officer at Dhakuwakhona. Dr. Amiya Kumar Bhuyan, the BJP candidate for 109 Bihpuria LAC filed his nomination in North Lakhimpur today.

Rao Gajendra Singh, who was denied a ticket by the BJP in favour of alliance partner AGP in 110 Nowboicha LAC today filed his nomination for the same constituency as an independent candidate.

Contesting for the twelfth time, ex-minister Premadhar Bora filed his nomination for 109 Bihpuria LAC today as an independent candidate.

Earlier on Monday the candidates of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Asom Gana Parichad (AGP) from various LACs Lakhimpur district filed their nominations. Bhupen Bora, the AICC General Secretary and two-time MLA from 109 Bihpuria LAC filed his nomination before the District Returning Officer at North Lakhimpur. This was followed by BJP’s Manab Deka, who also filed his nomination for the 111 Lakhimpur LAC at North Lakhimpur.

Jayanta Khaund, the AGP candidate for 110 Nowboicha LAC also filed his nomination before the same Returning Officer at North Lakhimpur on Monday. Five times Lakhimpur MLA and two-time cabinet minister Utpal Dutta also filed his nomination as an AGP candidate from 111 Lakhimpur LAC on Monday.

Similarly Dhakuwakhona MLA and state P&RD minister Naba Kumar Doley today filed his nomination for 112 Dhakuwakhona LAC before the Sub-Divisional Returning Officer at Dhakuwakhona.

The district administration put barricades on roads leading to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in North Lakhimpur to enforce strict Covid protocol during the nomination filing period allowing only two supporters to accompany the candidates inside the office.
