GUWAHATI, Aug 5 - There was no respite from the heat in Guwahati where the mercury touched 38.6 degree Celsius on Wednesday, which is 6.4 degree above normal.
The minimum temperature in the city during the day was 27.8 degree Celsius.
Temperatures in other towns of the State were also high � 35 degree Celsius in Dibrugarh, 36 in Tezpur and 37 in Silchar.
The IMD forecast for Guwahati and its neighbourhood during next 24 hours predicts a partly cloudy sky with possibility of development of thunder and lightning. Maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be 38 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively.
�After that (from August 7) it is expected that cloudiness will increase with a few spells of rain and thundershowers and temperature will decrease,� Regional Meteorological Centre deputy director Dr Sanjay O�Neill Shaw said.
The IMD said the well-marked low pressure area now lies over northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above the mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.
�Moderate rain or thundershowers is very likely to occur at many places over Assam and Meghalaya, and light to moderate rain and thundershowers is very likely to occur at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura,� the 24-hour weather forecast said.
