No record of poaching in State with Centre

NEW DELHI, May 3 - Poachers in Assam may be having a field day, but the Centre has no record of killing of wildlife, including rhinos, slaughtered during the past two years.

Minister of State for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar in a Lok Sabha reply said that data of Assam is not available for 2015 and 2016. In 2013, 60 wildlife trafficking cases were reported and in 2014, 28 such cases were recorded, Javadekar said.

The mandate of Wildlife Crime and Control Bureau is to collect intelligence and facilitate action of the State in combating wildlife crime and illegal trafficking. In Assam, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has been working together with the State Enforcement agencies to curb wildlife crime, which has also resolved in apprehension of accused in wildlife crime cases. A sub-regional unit of the Bureau has been set up in Guwahati, said Javadekar in a Lok Sabha reply.
