GUWAHATI, May 4 - Power Minister Rakibul Hussain today reviewed the States power situation and said that as of today there was no shortage of power in the State, and that it was due to the severe cyclonic storms lashing many parts of the State that power supply had been disrupted to a large extent.
Power is available from both the units of Palatana, one unit of Bongaigaon Thermal Power Station, besides the own generating units of APGCL. Power supply in many parts of the Barak Valley including Silchar town was affected due to a cyclonic storm on April 28. However, untiring efforts by the field staff of APDCL ensured restoration of power to Silchar town, including public health centres, Silchar Medical College and Assam University the next day. As such, the recent news items in the print and electronic media that the examinations of Assam University have to be deferred due to non-availability of power are factually incorrect, Hussain said in an official statement.
The minister also constituted a committee comprising the chairman of APDCL/APGCL/AEGCL and the managing directors of the three companies, and directed it to submit a report on the storm-induced damage within the next three days.
