No new coronavirus cases in Mizoram

AIZAWL, April 20 - Mizoram has not reported any new case of novel coronavirus after it had detected the first confirmed case on March 25.

Mizoram Health and Family Welfare Board vice chairman and ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator Dr ZR Thiamsanga said at least 132 samples have been collected and tested for the virus till date. Of these, one tested positive for the deadly virus last month, he said.

He added that samples of 35 inmates of Mizoram House in Mumbai were collected and tested negative for novel coronavirus on Monday. Samples of another 21 inmates, who earlier tested negative for the virus, have been collected for secondary test and their results are yet to be declared, he informed.

According to Thiamsanga, 16 samples were tested at the Zoram Medical College (ZMC) on Monday and their results were awaited. He also said that officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday visited ZMC and held interaction with officials over measures to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic. ZMC is a hospital dedicated for COVID-19 in the state.

Mizoram reported the first case of novel coronavirus on March 25 when a 50-year-old pastor, who had a travel history to the Netherlands, tested positive for the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, officials of the Health Department said that a total of 67,936 people have been screened for the virus till date in the state. They also said that a majority of people quarantined at the designated facilities in Mizoram have been discharged and the number of people currently under quarantine is 177.
