No change in Bangla influx pattern: Centre

NEW DELHI, April 22 � Government of India has said that there is no input to suggest any change in pattern of illegal infiltration from Bangladesh after the visit of Prime Minister of Bangladesh to India.

In response to a Rajya Sabha question, Minister of State for Home Affairs M Ramachandran said that there is no specific input indicating changes in the pattern of infiltration in the north-eastern States after the visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the Minister in reply to a question about Gauhati High Court�s judgement on infiltration, said the Centre is aware of illegal immigration from Bangladesh to India. As this activity takes place clandestinely, no specific details are available about the magnitude of this illegal infiltration into India. �

The joint communique issued after the visit of the Bangladesh Prime Minister contained the blue print for future course of bilateral engagement on issues including terrorism, infiltration, he added.

Meanwhile, the number of Bangladeshi nationals overstaying in India� has been increasing over the years. These nationals who entered the country on valid documents have oversstayed. In 2008, 31,229 Bangladeshi nationals overstayed, out of which 12,625 have since been deported.

The figure was 24,497 in 2006 and it increased to 25,712 the next year. The highest number of Bangladeshi nationals deported was 13,692 in 2006.
