No anomalies in NRC form: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 28 Terming the suspension of the pilot project of National Register of Citizenship (NRC) update in Barpeta and Chaygaon revenue circles as a well-hatched conspiracy by the State government, the Assam Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said there were no anomalies in the registration forms as claimed by the ruling Congress government.

BJP State president Ranjit Dutta said that the developments made it clear that the Tarun Gogoi government was making a total surrender before the vested interested lobbies that did not want a foolproof and updated NRC.

It needs to be mentioned here that government spokesperson Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently claimed that there were a few anomalies in the NRC registration forms and that the government would rectify those errors in consultation with all political parties and organizations, including the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU) before restarting the update process.

The State BJP had interpreted the development as a conspiracy by the Congress government. BJP national vice president and MP Bijoya Chakravorty had called the suspension of the project a surrender of the Tarun Gogoi government to the Bangladeshis so as to secure its vote bank.

Dutta strongly criticizing the proposal of the government to simplify the NRC registration forms, stated that there were no flaws in the registration forms as claimed by the government.

We oppose the government proposal to simplify the NRC registration forms as the step will jeopardize the political rights of the indigenous communities of the State, said Dutta.

The party has already launched a vigorous movement in the State to protest the suspension of the NRC update process as well as garner public opinion at the national level.
