NL recalls contributions of Tolan Chandra Phukan

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, March 18 - The birth centenary of a pioneer of modern education in Lakhimpur district, renowned academician and administrator Tolan Chandra Phukan (1918-1993) was celebrated today at his native village Tinikuriagaon on the outskirts of North Lakhimpur.

A public meeting was held to celebrate the occasion inside the premise of Baithawati Thaan at Tinikuria village where the life and works of the outstanding academician was recalled. The centenary celebration meeting was inaugurated by Deepika Buragohain, noted writer and retired professor and chaired by Dr Mukunda Rajbangshi, retired Principal of Lakhimpur Girls� College. A souvenir titled Smritir Anuranan on the life of Tolan Chandra Phukan, edited by Deepali Dutta Bordoloi and Rupali Phukan Bhuyan was released on the occasion. The souvenir was released by Biswa Baruah, former president in-charge of Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The meeting was also addressed by Premadhar Borah, former Education Minister of Assam, Dr Hemanta Kumar Baruah, vice-president of Asam Sahitya Sabha, Phuleswari Saikia and many others. The meeting was anchored by Chandra Borah, president of Nabik.

Four awards in the memory of Late Tolan Chandra Phukan and his wife Late Parul Phukan for securing highest marks in Mathematics and Assamese in the HSLC and HS results from Lakhimpur district annually were announced in the meeting.
