NITI Forum for NE meet today

NEW DELHI, April 9 - The first meeting of newly constituted NITI Forum for Northeast will focus on strategies for improving road, rail and air connectivity in the northeastern region.

The meeting to be held in Agartala tomorrow will be chaired by NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajeev Kumar in attendance of Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh and the chief ministers of the northeastern states. The meeting proposes to identify and target early bird projects in areas of connectivity, agricultural productivity and industrial development to give fillip to the region�s growth.

Briefing newsmen ahead of the meeting, Kumar and Dr Singh said the broad agenda include, among others, hydropower, agriculture and allied sectors, water management and tourism promotion. The North East Tourism Development Council (NETDC) will work closely with the northeastern states for tourism promotion, they said.

Emphasising the need to identify constraints, streamline resources and add renewed focus on the northeastern region, the NITI Aayog vice chairman and DoNER Minister also spoke about the theme for the meeting � �Moving towards a prosperous North East Region�.

The NITI Forum was constituted in February to ensure sustainable economic growth of the region and periodically review the development status.
