NIPP urges Centre to protect indigenous people

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Aug 24 - North East Indigenous Peoples Parliament (NIPP) today urged Government of India to take necessary steps to protect the indigenous people of Tripura and Northeastern region as a whole.

Otherwise, we will take up whatever necessary actions or movements to protect and safeguard the indigenous people of North East, NIPP coordinator Ningthouja Lancha has warned.

We are once again urging the government to be sensitive on what is happening in NE region in general and Tripura in particular before it is too late, he added.

NIPP is a forum of around 30 indigenous communities of NE committed to resolving issues posing a threat to the survival of the indigenous peoples of the region.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Lancha condemned the violence that broke out between two groups of people in Agartala following a public rally yesterday by Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura to mark the 6th Schedule Day of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Stating that the Tripura incident may create an unwanted scene in NE region if things are not resolved properly, he demanded upon the Tripura Chief Minister to tender an apology to the people for allegedly accepting the illegal migrants as citizen of Tripura or NE.

We may hold an emergency meeting of NIPP to discuss the ongoing issues, he informed.

He also alleged that the violence in Agartala has claimed lives, besides injuring 40 others while many are reported missing. However, reports from Agartala contradicted the allegation claiming the number of injured persons may reach 30 and the situation is under control after West Tripura district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the capital city till August 25.

Two organisations North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) and Centre for Research and Advocacy (CRAM) have urged both the Centre and Tripura Government to immediately stop the unwanted acts and protect the rights of the indigenous people of Tripura, besides conducting a detailed investigation into the unfortunate incidents and to prosecute all those responsible in the August 23 incident.

All the victims should be awarded adequate compensation, said NEDF Convenor U Nobokishore and CRAM Secretary Jiten Yumnam, in a press release. Government of India should uphold the rights of indigenous people of Tripura. All necessary steps be initiated to prevent similar attacks on indigenous community, they said.
