IMPHAL, Nov 1 - Ningol Chakkouba, the festival of Manipur during which married sisters and daughters are invited for grand feasts by their guardians and brothers, was celebrated across the State on Tuesday.
Ningol means daughters, while Chakkouba means an invitation for a traditional lunch at the house of the parents or brothers. Thus the festival is a special day for the married daughters of Manipuri society.
Since early morning, the married sisters and daughters visit their mother�s place wearing their finest and bring the best fruits and sweets for the season for their parental families. In return, they were also presented gifts by the parents and brothers, while the sisters bless their brothers for a long prosperous life following a grand feast with various courses reflective of the local cuisine. During their daylong visit, they also exchange their respective family stories, etc. As most of the families celebrate the festival, not only the busy Khwairamband Keithel in main Imphal town here, but the important roads leading to the State capital wore deserted look during the festival on Tuesday. To meet the fish demand for the festival, the State Fisheries Department had even organised a fish fair at the Thangmeiband Athletic Union ground here on Monday.
Manipur Governor Dr Najma A Heptulla, Chief Minister O Ibobi, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Assembly Speaker Th Lokeshwar, presidents of Pradesh Congress Committee and BJP Manipur Pradesh, besides IG Assam Rifles (South) and GOC Red Shields also extended their greetings on the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba and Kut festivals to the people of the State wishing them happiness and joy.
On the other hand, Kut, the post-harvest festival of the Kuki-Chin-Mizo tribes in Manipur was also celebrated across the State with gaiety here on Tuesday. The main attraction of the festival was the Miss Kut beauty pageant. More than a dozen beauties are vying for the Miss Kut crown.
