Ningol Chakkouba celebrated

IMPHAL, Nov 15 � Manipuris today celebrated their greatest annual festival � Ningol Chakkouba across the State with ningols (married daughters/sisters) visiting their parents in their finest clothes with fruits and sweets for Chakkouba following an invitation for a grand feast by their respective parents or brothers.

The movement of ningols, along with their children, created road congestions along all the important roads in the State capital.

Ningols, generally, return home with smiles on their faces after enjoying the various cuisines prepared in their honour. They also receive gifts from their kin during their stay with their parents and brothers.

Most of the families prepare a variety of fish dishes, while blankets, other daily use utensils and furniture are the preferred gifts from their respective parents/brothers.

Many social organizations also celebrated the festival by organizing grand feasts for all communities. Manipur Baptist Convention Central Church in Imphal also organised Ningol Chakkouba for the fourth time here today.

Former Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing, his son Victor Keishing, who is the Parliamentary Secretary for Tribal Development Department, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, MLAs P Brojen (Wangjing-Tentha Assembly constituency, Korungthang of Tengnoupal Assembly constituency and former MLA RK Thekho and others were also present on the occasion.

Around 500 women, including those from other communities who were married to the majority Meitei community members, attended the celebration with their family members.

Pastor of MBC Centre Church Rev L Simon Raomai and Convenor Azinbou Abonmai of Board of Deacons spoke on the occasion.
