Nilambazar residents hit by artificial floods

By Correspondent

NILAMBAZAR, June 9 A major problem afflicting the people of the greater Nilambazar area during every rainy season is artificial floods.

The worst-hit by artificial floods are the people living on either side of National Highway 44, besides shopkeepers and general passengers of buses along with school and college goers. The National Highway 44 gets inundated during the rainy season since the roadside drains on either side have not been constructed by the authorities concerned despite repeated demands by the various political and social organisations of Nilambazar and local people.

The area here being low lying gets inundated easily even after the slightest rain and gets clogged for a few days on either side of the roads, which subsequently leads to a muddy situation. The concious section of the area feel that to mitigate the problem of artificial floods in the area, roadside drains are the need of the hour.

The passengers of public buses on National Highway 44 have continued to suffer from constant water logging throughout the whole rainy season. Apart from others, school and college goers along with businessmen also suffer greatly all through the monsoon season.

The only solution, as unanimously agreed, is to have drains over a stretch of at least one km on NH 44 from Nilambazar Electicity office to Nilambazar College and another one-km long drain on Jatrapur road upto the Veterinary Hospital.

Besides, a proper drainage system with outlets should also be set up in the market in the area. The market that normally remains open throughout the whole day also goes through hardship during rains due to artificial floods.

A number of businessmen here said that the major problem of the area is the lack of a proper drainage system. Due to the clogged drains on the either side of the NH, people have to face artificial floods. Moreover, a number of residents and shopkeepers of the area are also partially responsible for the clogged drains. Since the area is not provided with a garbage disposal system, even the businessmen association has not arranged dustbins for garbage disposal. The public of the area have demanded the NH authorities to construct the roadside drains to eradicate the problem of artificial floods on the National Highway at Nilambazar before July as the initial step for the welfare of the public of greater area.
