Night city bus services likely from Oct 1

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - Night city bus services are expected to start in Guwahati from October 1.

This was stated by Dr M Angamuthu, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, during a meeting held here today between representatives of six city bus unions and the administration.

Dr Angamuthu said that night services will be started in two or three major routes on an experimental basis for benefit of commuters. As per the plan, buses will ply in the selected routes till midnight and again from around 4 am.

Meanwhile, during todays meeting it was decided that some of the city bus routes in Guwahati will be changed as it was found that circular routes have failed to attract good response from passengers.

The DC said that the administration wants all existing city bus unions to come under a single umbrella and join a united coordination committee under guidance of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA).

The committee will comprise the DTO, representatives of city bus unions, DCP (Traffic), representative of the district administration, GMC officials and PWD officials.

Among other things, the committee will also study things like route rationalisation and expansion of city bus services in the Greater Guwahati area.

Todays meeting also took stock of other details like number of buses affiliated to each union, their registration status, number of buses plying in each route and so on.

Dr Angamuthu, who is also Chairman of the RTA, directed all unions to furnish the necessary details by September 28.

He said that all city buses will have to strictly adhere to the Motor Vehicle Act and the rules set by the RTA.
