By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, March 12 - Northeast India Federation of Journalists (NIFJ) has condemned atrocities on journalists by police while they cover news and events. While urging State Governments to ensure safety and security of journalists, the NIFJ also demanded an inquiry into the incident on the Assam-Mizoram border on Saturday.

The NIFJ in a Press release said that News 18 Assam-North East journalist Emmy C Lawbei was brutally beaten up by Assam police on Saturday while she was covering a protest programme by Mizo students on the Assam-Mizoram border.

Lawbei sustained injuries on her shoulder and back. Lawbei said that the journalists were ahead of the students. There was some verbal exchange followed by lathi charge. Police started chasing us, beating everyone on the way. They kept beating us even after we told them that we were journalists, the release said quoting Lawbei.
