NHRC orders compensation to torture victim

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Assam government to pay compensation of Rs 1 lakh to one Shaukat Ali, who was tortured by miscreants in the presence of police personnel at Biswanath Chariali on April 7, 2019.

The Commission has directed that the compensation be paid to Ali by October 24 this year. NHRCs directions came following a complaint lodged before it by Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia on April 12 last year.

The NHRC further directed the DGP Assam to apprise it within four weeks of action taken against the police officials involved in the incident and warned of invoking appropriate laws if this directive is ignored, said a statement issued by Saikia on Wednesday.

He said that in the relevant order, dated September 9, the NHRC specifically referred to lack of desired response from the Government of Assam and the Assam Police in connection with the case and instructed the Chief Secretary to furnish proof of payment of compensation to Shaukat Ali by October 24, 2020.
