GUWAHATI, May 6 A major tragedy was averted when an under-construction bridge of the National Highway Authority of India over the Digaru river collapsed this morning. Although no one was injured, the State government has ordered an inquiry.
Questions are being raised over the quality of construction materials used for the project. Local people alleged the construction unit compromised on the quality to earn more profits.
The incident could have easily taken a number of lives. How can the government allow such poor quality work, especially when it concerns public safety? Accountability has to be set and those responsible for the project must be brought to book, a local said.
Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu said an inquiry has been ordered.
