NGT directive on NH-37 diversion at KNP

GUWAHATI, July 14 - The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the State Secretary concerned and the Director of the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) to be present before it on August 24 in connection with the Original Application No. 174 of 2013, and submit a compliance report with regard to the directions of the Tribunal passed earlier in the case.

The Original Application No. 174 of 2013 was filed by Rohit Choudhury with a plea to divert the KNP stretch of the National Highway-37 to the north bank of the Brahmaputra from the Jakhalabandha point on the south bank to connect with the Numaligarh point again on the south bank by constructing one more bridge over the Brahmaputra river.

The Tribunal has also asked the officers from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway, National Highway Authority of India, Secretary, PWD (NHOS) and Ministry of Road Transport to be present before the Tribunal on the same day and submit compliance reports with regard to the directions of the Tribunal passed earlier in the case.

All the above representatives of the respondents in the case have also been asked to inform the Tribunal about the status of the detailed project report (DPR) of the State Government�s proposed flyovers on the animal corridors on the NH-37 in the KNP stretch, asking whether there is any DPR in relation to the construction of flyovers.
