NGOs to boycott polls if non-tribals contest

By Correspondent

TURA, Sept 3 - A conglomeration of civil bodies on Wednesday resolved to boycott the upcoming polls to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), if non-tribal contestants sought to contest the polls. Further, the Ngos warned that they would not allow non-tribals to vote in the Council polls slated for October 12.

NGOs like Garo Students Union, Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People, Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) and Federation of Achik Freedom attended the meeting held here.

The meeting concluded that if any non-tribal candidate from the three open seats of Phulbari, Rajabala and Mahendraganj made any attempt to contest, the civil bodies will boycott the GHADC polls.

District Council is for protection of the indigenous peoples right, we will not allow the non-tribals to vote, said Tengsak Momin, president of GSU. The meeting raised serious concern over illegal influx in the plain belt areas of Garo Hills.
