NGOs renew demand for removal of GHADC office-bearer

By Correspondent

TURA, June 8 - Members of several organisations and NGOs, including the GSU, FKJGP, AYWO and ADE, today marched to the office of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), seeking the removal of the chairman of the Forest Advisory Committee, Sofiur Rehman of the BJP.

Rehman has been at the centre of a controversy after some posts on the social media were attributed to him, which allegedly berated the Garo community. He, however, denied that the objectionable statements were posted by him, stating that his social media account was hacked. Rehman is an elected MDC from Balachanda.

The NGOs had demanded Rehmans removal on an earlier occasion too.

The NGO and student activists thronged the GHADC office and placed a three-point charter of demands to the GHADC CEM, Dipul Marak.

They demanded Rehmans removal, cancellation of a TNT licence given to a businessman and removal of the nokma who allegedly sold tribal land to outsiders at Boldamgre village and cancellation of the land pattas.

Meanwhile, the protesters have set a weeks deadline for fulfilment of their demands.

When contacted, the GHADC chief confirmed the meeting with the NGO and student leaders.
