SHILLONG, April 8 Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said that its ironic that some NGOs who rake up the influx issue frequently are the ones who are creating hurdles in the Governments efforts to address the issue.
Replying to the discussion on the Governors address, Sangma said that some of the NGOs are not allowing the fencing work to go ahead along the Indo-Bangla border resulting in easy entry of illegal Bangladeshis into the country, Sangma said during his reply.
The Border Security Force is regularly apprehending illegal Bangladeshis while attempting to enter the country because some of the NGOs have created hurdles in fencing the Indo-Bangla border, he said.
Sangma was referring to a conglomerate of organisations, who have opposed the construction of the fence at various areas of the State along the Indo-Bangla border demanding that it be erected on the zero line.
Bangladesh interprets the fence as a defense outpost and since India and Bangladesh have signed a bilateral agreement that all defense outposts must be 150 yards away from the zero line, the demand of the NGOs has created a problem in erection of the fence.
Sangma further said that the demand of the NGOs to introduce the Inner Line Permit (ILP) is problematic. It is difficult to implement as a Government-constituted committee has pointed out, he added.
Sangma, moreover, informed about the Governments initiatives in addressing the issue of influx stating that various new departments and posts have been created in the recent past solely to check influx.
But the Governments effort has to converge with all the stakeholders initiatives so that the problem is addressed from the roots, he added.
