NGOs demand doctors transfer

By Correspondent

TURA, June 19 - Acting on a complaint from residents of Rongsak and its adjoining areas in the East Garo Hills, several student bodies and NGOs today began a two-day picketing of the DMHO office at Williamnagar. The NGO members sought transfer of the doctor posted at the Bansamgre PHC over cases of medical negligence as well as non-attendance.

Members of the GSU, ADE, FAF, AYWO and others led the picketing programme which began from 10 am and continued till 4 pm. The NGOs will continue their protest tomorrow.

The doctor in question, Dr Alprina Sangma, has been posted at the PHC for close to six years, but according to villagers, she hardly attends office or even tends to patients.

There have been many cases of medical neglect and rude behaviour on the part of the doctor. We want the doctor to be transferred from the PHC immediately, said SN Marak, GSU member. Earlier, the villagers lodged a complaint against the doctor before the DMHO and the DC of the East Garo Hills, but no action was allegedly taken.
