NGOs come forward in rehabilitating Morigaons flood-hit people

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, Feb 7 - At a time when Dispur is doing nothing to rehabilitate the hundreds of flood-affected people of the Lahorighat revenue circle in Morigaon district, three NGOs Wales Fargo of the United States, United Way Bengaluru and Caritas India have come forward to provide shelter to 300 such families hailing from Tulsibari and Palahguri villages which were devastated by floods caused by the Brahmaputra last year.

Apart from construction of dwelling houses for the homeless people, the three NGOs will chalk out different self-employment schemes for the jobless and the flood-affected people of the area.

Meanwhile, 35 dwelling houses have been constructed and training on poultry farming is currently being imparted to the unemployed youths of the area.

The scheme was formally inaugurated by Morigaon ADC Ananta Gogoi on February 2. Gogoi thanked the NGOs for their laudable move to help the flood victims of the Lahorighat area. Hundreds of families at Lahorighat were rendered homeless due to dyke breach caused by the Brahmaputra last year. Most of these families were dependent on agriculture.
